Bounceback Debt Collection Class Action

About this Case:

TMLG has filed suit on behalf of Washington consumers against the for-profit debt collection company Bounceback, Inc. for violating the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (“FDCPA”) and the Washington Consumer Protection Act. Plaintiffs Wodena Cavnar, Rosaline Terrill, Linda Parks, and David Scott received letters from Defendant threatening them with criminal prosecution for debts arising from unpaid checks for small retail purchases. These notices bore the seal and letterhead of a county prosecutor, which was rented out to Defendant in exchange for a cut of the collection fees. Plaintiffs paid not only the check amount but more than $180 in fees to “avoid criminal conviction.”

Case Status:

This case was filed in July 2014. The parties reached a settlement in March 2016, and the court gave final approval to the settlement in September 2016. Checks have been mailed to all eligible class members.
